WARM IN THE WINTER 12 Inch Single

GLASS CANDY

"WARM IN THE WINTER" 12 Inch Single

Hot off the presses. We just got these in last nite from Portland. This is our first real peak at "BODY WORK", Glass Candy's much anticipated third album. Johnny & Ida have been destroying clubs with both of these tracks for almost two years now. Forever pushing forward into new ground from where "B/E/A/T/B/O/X" & 2010's "FEELING WITHOUT TOUCHING" left off, they candy coated this slice of analog glamour & sprinkled it with some stardust on top. Lazer driven melodies bounce off electro primitive drums that would make Moe Tucker proud. Ida's crazy like a monkey & happy like a new year as she sings a call & response to the crowd. "Warm In The Winter" continues to unfold for seven plus minutes of shimmering percussive synth. The proto boogie B side "Beautiful Object" is so grimey it makes us think of bbbb's production on the first Madonna album. The rhythms keep turning while future & past collide. Johnny gives us the usual dosage of heavy bass & crisp handclaps. Written & Recorded in the icey Montreal winter. Mixed for all seasons.

Desire 'II' CD

DESIRE

Self Titled Debut Album CD

When Glass Candy was on tour a couple of years ago, they stumbled into a foggy night club in Montreal and saw a woman singing an entire set of Jean-Pierre Massiera songs. Meet Megan Louise, the crystal clear tenor who sings in French and English over Desire's debut Lp. Completely blown away by her angelic voice, Johnny Jewel decided to set up an dueling studio in Montreal & begin tracking the Desire album. "I had been working on music for an abstract project named Desire for over two years. I was just waiting for the right singer to come along. When I heard Megan, I knew I had to try and convince her to do it." After spending the next few months building a studio, & watching the snow fall, Desire was born. Johnny brought in collaborator, Nat Walker on drums and synthesizer. Last year the two toured the world as the critically acclaimed disco noir outfit Chromatics, also on the Italians Do It Better imprint. "We were wanting to do a new project that had elements of what we were doing in Chromatics, but explore the sound and limitations of pop music more." In addition to the percusive guitars, stacatto synths, and layers of piano, Desire borrowed a three piece string section of students from le Conservatoire de Musique de Montreal, adding a romantic overtone throughout the album. Desire's music stands right on the line between indie pop and electronic dance music. Without making any promises to either camp, the group delivers plenty of lush melodies and hypnotic drums to keep everyone hooked. This album explores themes of hope & lost love. The result is a gorgeous collection of eight songs that embrace the innocence of youth, and the pain of heartbreak. Vinyl version features a full color lyric insert!

This week "Under Your Spell" was buzzing through movie goers ears all over the world with the release of Nicolas Winding Refn's pscho-thriller "Drive". This record is in it's fourth pressing & these are our last copies.

GLASS CANDY - 'Beatbox' CD

CHROMATICS

IN THE CITY CD

After five years of experimenting with a string of different singers, Chromatics introduced Ruth Radelet as the lead actress to star in their films in 2005. Forever standing out from the crowd, Chromatics imagined the soft rock focus of Hall & Oates stretched over a Fleetwood Mac beat. Trading the dancefloor for gorgeous chords & melancholic strings. They lived where it was always late & neon lights glimmered across the wet streets. This record archives studio work between 2004 & 2006 leading up to the now infamous "Night Drive" album. The title track, "In The City", enjoyed a second life popularized by the American television show "Nip Tuck". Where the song's rhythmic chirp symbolized the slow drip of anesthetic as the characters went under the knife. "Dark Day" first appeared on the unexpected breakout label sampler ,"After Dark". This is the original version of "Hands In The Dark" from 2006 before they added the spiked electronic sparkle of Caribbean air. The 808 bass will pummel your speakers, and the guitars remember Martin Hannett's coloring of Joy Division. Meanwhile, synthesizers crash into the beat as Ruth hums a melody at the top of the lighthouse. Side one closes with the slo motion "I'm On Fire". A cover of the Bruce Springsteen classic originally written for "Nebraska", that later appeared on "Born In The U.S.A.". Chromatics is the blood & guts of American imagery, with a taste for European noir. Pour a little out for Danny Federici tonight. On the B side, the record takes a moment to breathe with the abstract instrumental, "Tears Of Pain". Revisiting the spacial elements of Morricone & Krzysztof Komeda overlooking a city of bridges. The vocoder driven "Lady" sounds like a Japanese sequencer on it's death bed struggling to arpeggiate it's last electronic breath. Then the band gives a nod to one of the greatest bands to ever come out of Portland, Dead Moon. Their cover of "Dagger Moon" hovers in a thick synthetic waltz from 2005 that predates all drag. The record closes with the unreleased instrumental version of "In The City". Meant to appear on the original 12", but got destroyed at the pressing plant in a wharehouse fire. This record has been 100 % remastered with analog equipment from the original tape reels. So fresh, it's hard to believe that this record dates back to 2004-2006. Full color artwork with the classic drawing of Ruth glaring into an uncertain future with a single tear. Comes with a full color insert with lyrics on one side, & a drawing of dueling Peggy Moffitts on the other. Peggy Moffit was the 1960's muse for the visionary fashion designer, Rudi Gernreich. Vinyl version includes a free digital download code with a bonus track titled, "The Long Road Home". Due to Chromatics' disregaurd for music industry laws, & a blatant Francoise Hardy vocal sample, this track cannot be sold. So we decided to give it to you. This record has it all. Despair...Romance...Hope...Beauty...Pain. All in under 103 beats per melody.

Chromatics - Night Drive

CHROMATICS

"NIGHT DRIVE" Deluxe Edition Double Lp

So much ink has been spilled all over the world about this album in the last three years. The crazy thing is, "Night Drive" as we know it was never meant to be officially released. Originally intended only to be the cdr demo version of the incomplete album burned for a handfull of dates in California. That was the end of summer 2007. At that time, Chromatics was mostly unknown throughout the world. With only a handfull of bootlegged demos floating through the ethernet, the music was far off the radar of the music industry. No one had any clue what was around the corner. Soon the press would get ahold of it, & the album would spread like wildfire overnight. The rough mix was done in Portland on a lunar eclipse the night before Chromatics left for their first leg of performances with new singer Ruth Radelet.

The record opens at the end of a long night with our heroine making a phone call to her lover. He asks her to pick up a bottle of wine. In the distance through the muffled walls of a sweaty nightclub you can hear the dj's closing their set with the Mirage banger, "Lady Operator." She drives to the coast to clear her head. Gripping the wheel with the throb of "Night Drive" she takes control. As the hi hat attacks your speakers, her hair blows in the breeze. This is the opening of the record that continues to define Chromatics' unique sound. The extreme juxtaposition of raw frailty against jagged violence.

Feeling out of place & dead with no reflection, they question the line between birth & mortality in songs like "I Want Your Love" & "Mask."

The music is drenched in reverb echoeing the death of hope & the price of nostalgia. The most powerful example of this is their daring take on the Kate Bush classic, "Running Up That Hill," a favorite amongst fans & critics alike. Chromatics has been closing their captivating live sets with this song every night. With ethereal songs like "Tomorrow Is So Far Away," "Tick Of The Clock," & "Let's Make This A Moment To Remember," they give the listener the space to breathe. We get a glimpse of their chequered past with the post punk sheen of Joy Division on "Healer".

After three years, why is the final version just surfacing now? Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. In a recent interview Johnny Jewel was quoted, "It was so hectic mixing that record. Everything imaginable went wrong. From Ruth burning her hand the night we had to finish the vocal takes, to the tapes getting overheated on the reels, to the final mix of the fourth side getting lost in the mail on the way to the pressing plant. Of course i didn't make a cd copy of the mix either. Adam & I started to think this record was cursed & we were never going to get it out. When it came time to do a string of shows on the west coast, we still didn't have the final mix. So we decided to make a temporary cdr version of the first three sides. We were burning them on laptops while we were driving down the 101. Then the press got ahold of that demo & everything exploded. To make things even more ridiculous, Italians Do It Better was broke. The label was basically nonexistent, it was really only a concept of mine & Mike Simonetti's. Still in the infant stages of coming together. We had an order from stores & distributers worldwide for over 5000 "Night Drive" cds overnight, but couldn't even press them. You gotta remember this was three years ago before "B/E/A/T/B/O/X" was out, & before "After Dark" was available digitally, so we had no money coming in. All this buzz & no releases available. It was such a joke. I remember we had to borrow money from a distributer to press the first three hundred eighty discs. We just kept flipping the cds...the more we sold...the more we made. In the back of my mind, I always figured the tapes would show up, but they never did. Then last year when I moved to Montreal, I had to change my address with the post office in the states. Two months later, the original tapes somehow returned to my old apartment in Portland where Ida lives now. Lost in purgatory at a dead letter office in northern California that whole time. It seemed like it had to be an omen. So we decided to have the whole thing remastered in it's entirety & finally pressed to vinyl. We want to say thankyou so much to everyone who let this record into their lives, we love you! & Now it's finally finished."

The lost side of the album is dark & abstract. Opening with the almost funerial "Shining Violence". Where detuned analog synths collide & struggle to hang onto a fading melody. Followed by the sleeper hit, "Circled Sun", & the Vangelis inspired reflection of life's duality in "The Gemini". Looking into a broken mirror, Ruth is more vulnerable than ever with the bare bones bass & vocal of "Bell". "Night Drive" closes with an arpeggiated musical refrain from the beginning of Side One. "Acelerator" reinterprates elements of "Night Drive's" chord progression while leaning heavily on the gear shift. As painted lines in the road begin to strobe, Chromatics propels full speed ahead into an uncertain future.

Tie Dye - Fisherman's Bend

TIE DYE

"Fisherman's Bend" 12 Inch Single

Tiedye was formed during nights of bikemoshing, slowdancing & wierdsailing. Two guys form the heart of this obscure and obvious formation of what we call the band Tiedye. From the rocks & waves of the west coast of Sweden, Tiedye explores the sounds of dreaming disco, windblowing pop & gruyèresmelling rock. The gritty Italians Do It Better Records got a nose for the smell of saltwater drained boogierock & adopted Tiedye to the dramatic Italians-family. Their first two releases gathered much attention in the underground. Their now infamous cover version of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" catapulted them into the worldwide spotlight. They soon followed up with a remix for Feist, another instant early Italians Do It Better classic that solidified them as a force to be reckoned with. This 12" showcases their first original composition, along with remixes from Studio's Dan Lissvik & A Mountain Of One. The Dan Lissvik version was the epic closer to our Solid Gold compilation last year. Tiedye re-invented modern AOR as we know it. Sit back, relax, & enjoy the music.

Mike Simonetti - Capricorn Rising

MIKE SIMONETTI

"CAPRICORN RISING" LP

Italians Do It Better head honcho Mike Simonetti got his start in the New York City underground House scene in the late 1980's. As a teenager he promoted parties at the legendary dance club Mars. Twenty years, countless edits, mixes & DJ gigs around the world later, Italians Do It Better is pleased to present Mike's first slice of original music. "Capricorn Rising" is songs for the dance floor & the party after the after party.

Anyone who's ever been on a trip through Mike's basement knows it's like a visit to a museum of recorded music of the 20th century. In these crates you can easily find the 1st Carl Craig 12" stacked up against a pile of unopened Whitehouse LP's he found in a dumpster somewhere resting beside a Bush Tetras test pressing. If you've caught one of his infamous DJ sets, you know he can keep the dance floor playful, heady & obscure all at the same time. His recordings are equally eclectic. Alternating between pulsating rhythms & atmospheric clouds. He blurs the lines between major, minor, & motorik.

The lead track "Third Of The Storms" is a collaboration with Australian pop singer Sam Sparro. It started three years ago in a hotel room in New Zealand with Johnny Jewel. The video for "Black and Gold" came on in the middle of the night. They were both intrigued by what they heard & Sparro would continue to come up in conversation a few more times over the years. Sam would often play Mike's Whitney / Swizz Beats edit to warm up the audience right before hitting the stage. They initially got in touch over twitter & were introduced in person at a hotel in Manhattan. Hands were shook & champagne flowed. A gentlemen's agreement was made, he was the perfect man for the job. Sam offered to sing on a track if Mike would remix a song for his upcoming album. Sparro's voice glides & harmonizes like a soft cloud over Mike's ambient sound of the Autobahn via the Pulaski Skyway. "Third Of The Storms" was recorded in studios on both coasts. The vocals were layed down in Los Angeles & the beat was programmed in New Jersey (the title was lifted from Hellhammer, one of Simonetti's favorite proto black metal bands). "Song For Luca" is an instrumental Disco burner dedicated to Mike's first born. The beat nods towards both Krautrock & big room Progressive House, a genre generally ostracized by Disco & House purists. With it's wall of hypnotic pipe organs, "Dust Devil" sounds like it could easily fit on a soundtrack from the 80's scored by Mike's long lost Italian uncle Claudio or Amon Duul. The piano based "Renko's Theme" is an abstract homage to Hill Street Blues. The title track "Capricorn Rising" gallops along relentlessly over sheets of distorted guitars & weather patterns. Cover concept & design by Johnny Jewel with airbrush work by Branko Vranic. The liner notes boast that Mike uses Dunkin Donuts exclusively. There's always room for Ice Cream.

MIKE SIMONETTI & JOHNNY JEWEL

Albuterol Cd

In December 2007, We threw a huge gala on a cold & rainy Friday night in Portland with Chromatics & Glass Candy. Mike came out to spin the party...the after party...and the party after the after party... We spent the next three days recovering, working on a mix, & trying to find a place for Mike to lay his weary head. The damp & grey climate is great if you're writing Wipers lyrics...but if you left your prescription asthma medicine (Albuterol) in Jersey, you're pretty much screwed. Day 1 : Mike stays with Me at chez Ruth / Daphne & Ruby (the sister cats) fur all over the apartment causes Mike's asthma to flair up even worse. Day 2 : We decided to relocate Monsiuer Simonetti to Ida's Candy Castle / Marlon's (the stray cat) tiger stripes almost close Mike's eyes forever. Day 3 : Adam & Natty offer him a warm bed...but Pimp C's (the cat freed from a shelter on the same day the UGK poet was released from prison) dander just about closes Mike's windpipe. Then it occurs to us...there's no cats at the studio, so we spend two days & nights listening to crates of killer cuts from Mike's library in New Jersey. Starting with around 80 songs and slowly narrowing it down to 10 traxxx that really complimented each other. Step 1 : Burn all the records to disc through analog preamps ... Step 2 : Edit the traxxx live using 3 cdjs. Step 3: Take the best edits and blend them all together in one long take live to tape. No computers were harmed on the set of this recording. At Italians Do It Better, we love our computers... But for a mix this dirty, with almost all live drummers, it just felt better doing it by hand. The end result runs the gamut of rock, disco, proto house, boogie, swedish glam, bizarre italo, soul, & some odd things in between. Not to mention the entire mix is slightly pitched down. Most likely due to exhaustion & Mike's almost comatose state. It just sounded heavier this way. The weekend came & went, & it was time for Mike to fly home... On our way to the airport, Ida chased a Fed Ex truck down Hawthorne. Just in time for the flight, the Albuterol finally came. Mike took it & all was well. There was so much confusion that weekend, I forgot to label the tape. It got lost in the shuffle. Tours came & went. New records were being made, & we forgot about it. Five months later Mike found a rough mix of it on his ipod & ripped a really lo fi version for the blog. The mix exploded (20,000 downloads & counting), but no one could guess the full tracklist. A couple of months ago we started Perseo & around that time I found the original mix in Portland. Here it is ...the way it was meant to be heard. Fully remastered back through tubes.

Perseo - Hollywood 7

MIKE SIMONETTI & JOHNNY JEWEL

"HOLLYWOOD SEVEN" 12" Single

"Hollywood Seven" has been a dance floor weapon of Mike Simonetti's DJ sets for almost six years. It's one of those tracks people come up to the booth & ask about the most. "What's that song about Omaha and the hotel?" We are happy to finally answer that question with this essential release. Rescued from the depths of dollar bin obscurity.

Though "Hollywood Seven" remained an outsider track in America, for years it's legacy was kept alive by various cover versions which went on to become hits in Australia & Europe. On the flip side of this 12," we compiled some of the more hard to find versions found around the globe.

In 2008 Mike & Johnny were in a record store in Perth, Australia killing time on tour when they found another version of the song while looking through crates of discount records. It was definitely fate! To find this song in the most random record store in the most remote city on the planet had to mean something. Mike spun it that night at an after party deep in the belly of a basement. The song had the classic feel of the original, but was more like a version performed by Neil Diamond's long lost Australian brother. Nine months later, Glass Candy had the night off in San Diego. Outside of a record store in an alley behind a pharmacy, Johnny stumbled across an even more bizarre interpretation of "Hollywood Seven." A strangely Hi-NRG inspired version mixed with shredding psych guitar riffs & sung completely in German! We were completely floored! & in 2010 Nat Walker (Chromatics / Desire) found yet another version of "Hollywood Seven" at a North Portland church rummage sale while looking for Hip Hop samples. This piano driven version was a glammy early 80's gospel private press record & is the only version known to contain the fourth verse.

Four years later, after intensive editing & mixing by the folks at Perseo headquarters in Rome, the ultimate "Hollywood Seven" record finally sees it's release. Don't look at this as simply an "edit record." Consider it a slice of unknown music history, an unlikely cover song that has become a dancefloor classic! Perseo records is proud to share it with you.

GLASS CANDY

Feeling without Touching 12" EP

While working on their new electric disco album "BODY WORK", Johnny & Ida, take a break from the dancefloor to explore the pop end of the rainbow. Delivering the official version of the title cut with heavy claps, drums & and an analog bass that might blow your speakers..."FEELING WITHOUT TOUCHING" has Ida sounding like Ronnie Spector over robotic woodblocks & synthesizers from the 70s. "SUGAR & WHITEBREAD" reinterprets the band's 2005 elctro funk hit. This time they borrow Nat Walker from Desire / Chromatics to lay down a deep & playful saxaphone solo. "COVERED IN BUGS" has Ida shrieking about the color of the sky 2000 years ago to her alter ego Eva over layers of rhodes piano that sound like Haley's comet sprinkling stardust across the night sky. Imagine Laurie Anderson & Vangelis on a road trip to see the northern lights.Record features the video mix of "FEELING WITHOUT TOUCHING"..."SUGAR & WHITEBREAD"..."COVERED IN BUGS"..."SHINE LIKE GOLD & DIAMONDS"...& instrumental mixes. Plus an unlisted mystery bonus on the b side (Vinyl only).Come's with a full color lyric insert & a poster of Ida No photographed & fractured through a kaleidoscope.Amazing!

GLASS CANDY - 'Geto Boys' 12inch

GLASS CANDY

Geto Boys 12"

After months of mastering issues (the bass was so heavy it was making the needle jump), legal issues, and remixing issues. We are excited to say that the Glass Candy "Geto Boys" 12" is finally in stock. And even better...it's a double A side. They've been destroying this song on tour all year. Samples the hip hop classic "Mind Playing Tricks On Me" from Houston legends, GETO BOYS (who sampled Isaac Hayes). The flip side of the record features the Deep Gems burner "Animal Imagination". If that wasn't enough, the record contains 12" instrumental versions and vocal edits of both songs. 3 tracks per side. This is an extremely limited one time vinyl pressing that you will never see on itunes. Packaging includes full color jacket, insert, and lyric sheet. "For a good time...call Glass Candy"...

INVISIBLE CONGA PEOPLE - 'Cable Dazed' 12inch

INVISIBLE CONGA PEOPLE

"Weird Pains / Cable Dazed" 12"

Justin Simon, one half of Conga People, is a Bloomfield native and veteran of the NJ hardcore scene. He and Mike Simonetti initially crossed paths at a show in 1994. Justin has been in amazing bands since he was in high school, & we've been following his music since day one. Always ahead of the pack ... Invisible Conga People mix krautrock and house into something refreshing & unique. No one else sounds like these guys. Percussive guitar, churning rhythms, & ascending vocals make a beautiful debut 12 inch. The B side, "Cable Dazed", made it's way onto the popular Solid Gold compilation we released a few months ago. Get this hard to find record on vinyl before we run out for good. 100 copies left.

GLASS CANDY - 'Beatbox' CD

APPALOOSA

"Intimate (Glass Candy Remix)" 12 inch Single

After turning down almost every imaginable group & record company on the planet, Glass Candy returns from the studio with their second remix in 11 years ...This time it's Appaloosa's "Intimate". Imagine the romantic Human League fronted by Nico covering Stereolab. That's about the only way we know how to describe this record. Glass Candy dips them in their signature analog glitter with some of Johnny's heaviest drums to date as the synthesizers gnaw at your speakers. The result is a beautiful pop song that will haunt you. This is also the first glimpse from our forthcoming AFTER DARK 2 compilation out later this year. The B side features the original version from Appaloosa. Who is in the studio working on their debut Lp for IDIB later this year. Bonus tracks include instrumentals, drums, and vocals. Special mail order only version on Opaque Ivory vinyl ! Not in stores.

TWISTED WIRES - 'One Night At The Raw Deal' 12inch

TWISTED WIRES

One Night At The Raw Deal 12" Single

One of our top 5 records of 2009. Twisted Wires are new to the Italians Do It Better family. The quartet comes from Houston, Texas (also the birthplace of one Johnny Jewel). A cascading waterfall of arpeggios & walls of guitar. Richard Durham's voice is romantic & new wave. The Linn drum machine destroys the track with percussion reminiscent of "Head Hunter" era Front 242 & the shuffle of the Mr. Fingers classic "Can You Feel It". 12 inch features an instrumental version & a drumless vocal mix with guitar. Seriously a favorite around here. We can't recommend this record enough. 18 minutes. Beautiful, timeless, & brilliant!

FARAH - 'Gay Boy' 12"

FARAH

Gay Boy 12" Single

For a long time, we seriously could not figure out what to do with this track. Easily the weirdest record we'll ever release. Recorded in Portland at suite 304 while Farah and Johnny were busy working on the debut Farah Lp, "Into Eternity". Her new album is more of a logical extension of her first 12" with us...the classic After Dark slow burner, "Law Of Life". "I was in the studio with Farah working day & night on the new album. She was playing me 4 track cassettes & reading lyrics she had written over the past 4 or 5 years...Then she played me a song called, "Gay Boy". I was immediately blown away. This track was ridiculous. We dropped everything & started making a beat for it that night. I knew it wouldn't fit on the Lp, but we did it anyways. The vocals were done in just two takes, and then we moved on. Over the next year, I kept coming back to this beat. Her voice is shaky & so vulnerable. I became obsessed with the intimacy of this track. Like your reading her journal." Like all cult artists, you are either going to love Farah or hate Farah. We love this record! Imagine LL Cool J's "I Need Love" mixed with The Shangri La's "Leader Of The Pack", through the eyes of a Texas valley girl on lithium. The 12" features two drastically different beats for the song plus bonus instrumentals & a vocal / 808 mix.

PREMIER RANG - 'Les Corps Humides' 12inch

PREMIER RANG

Les Corps Humides 12"

Brand new act out of Paris, they came to us out of nowhere...The music is heavy and repetitive. Guitar driven with hints of post punk, minimal synth, cold wave, & a dash of Chromatics. Dark & brooding instrumentals that blew the doors off of Mike's house. B side with "La Ronde".

$8.00

NITE JEWEL

Want You Back 12" EP

Thus is the follow up to her debut 12". Amazing full color art that would suit My Bloody Valentine more than Giorgio Moroder. The music is Ramona's trademark sound...almost psychadelic & baleric with spaced out vocals. If there was a shoegaze disco genre, she would be the queen! On the B side , a version of"All Out Of Order" sung in Spanish vocoder! Full color insert with a video portrait by Travis Peterson & a lyric sheet. Over 21 minutes of music.

$8.00

NITE JEWEL - 'What Did He Say' 12inch

NITE JEWEL

What Did He Say b/w Let's Go The Two Of Us Together 12"

We are proud to be the first to introduce the world to Los Angeles' NITE JEWEL. On her debut 12" she samples the 1983 boogie classic "Dangerzone " by Midnight Express to lay down the back beat for the title cut "What Did He Say". Classic underground synth pop recorded in her bedroom on 8 track casette. Not the most hi-fidelity record your ever going to spin, but Ramona's singing is contageous, and we think you'll fall in love with her like we did. B side features "Let's Go The Two Of Us Together". Itimate & gorgeous.

Fred Ventura - Years Go By

FRED VENTURA

"THE YEARS (Go By) 12" Single

We met Fred Ventura in 2006 over emails sent to Italians Do It Better headquarters. He was one of the first people from Europe to start writing the label prior to After Dark's release. It took us a few months to realize that this was Fred Ventura, the cult Italo legend from Milan.

Like a true gentleman, he had never bothered to mention it. Since the early 1980's Fred Ventura has released numerous singles in Europe & toured the world extensively as a solo artist. Last year, Johnny was in Bologna on tour with Desire & Fred came out to the show to drink Champagne & bring us some copies of the reissued tapes of Fred's early Post Punk group State Of Art. The lightbulb lit up & we asked him if he had any home recordings of his solo work. Months later, he sent us 83 tracks of cassette recordings between 1982 & 1987. They had been sitting upstairs in a dusty box at his parents house in Italy for the last 25 years. These tracks have only been heard by a handful of his closest friends. We were completely floored & honored! Finding a beautiful treasure completely untouched & preserved is so rare. The songs are raw & honest written by a romantic with a love for an anthemic chorus & a drum machine running through his veins. Think early minimal Depeche Mode with an Italian heart. Or New Order covering Madonna produced by Moroder. Yes, it's that good. Here we have the first official Italians Do It Better release of these songs on a 4 song 12" ep. This vinyl only release is a teaser for the "Don't Give Up" 18 track lp out in a couple of months. So in the meantime, slip on those Gucci loafers, rev up the Alfa Romeo and head down to the discotheque because life is too short...

Desire 'II' LP

DESIRE

Self Titled Debut Album

CHROMATICS

IN THE CITY Mini LP

Italians Do It Better owner / traveling dj salesman / heavy record collector, Mike Simonetti takes an edit to three very obscure 90s house tracks. We were able to recognize the a-side with some help. The track was altered significantly and intro extends and builds and builds and builds… Churning & hypnotic over 9 minutes in length ! All we could find on the internet are traces of a mysterious promo pressing (that's where we got all the credits from) on the legendary IL DISCOTTO label. The track seems to have been recorded at Green House, a former recording studio in Padova, Italy - the same city as the radio station's where it was found! Mike S

MIKE 003

"I'm Getting Too Old For This Shit" 12" EP

The MIKE series continues, wasting no space with 4 tracks from Mike Simonetti's vast edit "vault". The MIKE series has been releasing edits from Mikes archive for almost two years now. This release is special because it includes one of his most recognizable tracks... "Express Yourself" by the Gloved One & His Brothers. Even though it is almost 6 years old, it still gets heavy plays & has become a cult classic of sorts. There is also a slow disco chugger by a semi-collectible female Salsoul artist, as well as a psychedelic krautrock killer with extended fuzzed out guitar solo. The standout may be the re-edit of a very hot track these days, sung by a guitar slinging, hairy armed, troubadour armed with a Fender Strat & a heart of gold... But Mike had the original 45, (not the mp3 like everyone else) so it doesnt sound like crap! Take a chance on this record , you wont regret it. (wink wink) Edition of 300 pressed in the United Kingdom, only 50 copies available in North America. Then it's gone forever.

MIKE 002

"Lets Be Careful Out There" 12"

The Mike Simonetti "Edit Dump" continues, bringing us another round from his vast "Archive" ... AKA his basement. Some old & new edits he's done over the years. The A-side is an absolute floor filler. One of Mike's favourite songs of all time, Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere". From their live lp, "Tango In The Night". This edit teases the intro out so that when the song actually arrives you'll be cheering on the dancefloor. On the B-side we go obscure with a slow heavy burner you most definitely never heard before "Needs More Cowbell". Which begs the question ..."Doesn't everything?" Expanding from the mood of MIKE 001, Mr. Simonetti closes with "Who Let The Dogs Out", an obscure track from a very popular punk-funk band of the 80s. We have this for the lowest price anywhere in the world!

Rubies - 'I Feel Electric' 12

RUBIES Feat. FEIST

I Feel Electric (Tiedye Remix) 12" Single

Out of print for the last three years ... We are excited to announce that a handfull of these turned up at Italians Do It Better's studio in Portland. Everyone has been trying to track down this rare single. Most likely due to this being the brilliant opening track for our "SOLID GOLD" compilation. Nine minutes of romantic bliss, flanged acoustic guitars, tumbling congas, deep synthesizer, & haunting vocals from another dimension. Five years ago, we met Anton (Tiedye), in Sweden on one of our first trips across the pond. Back then Anton was a promoter for the party Mike was spinning at. We kept in touch & he started sending us edits & "remixes" ... Tiedye doesn't really do remixes. Instead they cover the song they are asked to remix. With "I Feel Electric", Tiedye covered the original & added Feist's vocals over their instrumental. Yes, that Feist. The end result is their interpretation in the true Tiedye style ... 80s tropical Swedish AOR! It sounds like the waves are crashing against you ... Dreamy.

GLASS CANDY - 'Life After Sundown' 12inch

GLASS CANDY

Life After Sundown 12" Single

In 2002, Glass Candy was on a grueling tour of the United States when their guitar was broken in two across Johnny's rib cage at a house party in Philladelphia. A fifteen person pile up allowed them to only make it one & a half songs through their live set. The band was stuck on the east coast & broke. With two cracked ribs that night sleeping in the freezing van, Johnny & Ida had to ask themselves ... Was it a sign from Candyland ? Glass Candy decided it was ... Left their guitar in the dumpster of an abondoned gas station ... Ditched their drummers & got back to the synthesizers & drum machines that they started with in 1996. You can feel the sense of exploration & freedom in this record. They spent 4 years working on an album that would eventually become
"B/E/A/T/B/O/X". This was our first taste of their new synth heavy spin on Donna Summer (Bad Girls) & Sparks (Number One In Heaven). Looking back now ... in some weird way, Italians Do It Better was born. Taking the studio away from punk into a deeper disco direction. Raw ... Wild ... & Ahead of it's time. They spent night after night splicing it together on two track reels ... & took over three months to mix ... Jesse Evans from Subtonix / The Vanishing guests on a crazy sax solo inspired equally by The Stooges' "Funhouse" & The Rolling Stones' "Emotional Rescue". This record will always remind of us that crazy winter in Portland where everything changed. It's hard to remember a time when synth heavy music, strings, arpeggios, congas, bells, saxophone, handclaps, etc... were taboo. But that's the way it was over here. We didn't know what to expect in terms of public response ... But this record caught fire in the underground, & seven years later, Johnny & Ida still slaughter "Life After Sundown" across the globe. This is our favorite version.

CHROMATICS - 'In the City' 12inch

CHROMATICS

Chromatics In The City 12"

Two & a half months ago, Johnny found 47 more copies of this amazing 12" while moving records from Portland to Montreal. It's the very first record on Italians Do It Better & Ruth's debut with Chromatics. Originally released in late 2006, this record has been out of print since 2008. Features the main title, "In The City," on the A side, which later ended up on the After Dark compilation. Followed by a zombie acappella taking us to the blurry space between waking & dreaming. The B side opens with the vinyl only,"In The Headlites," collaging the vocal refrain of "In The City" over an atmosphere fit for John Carpenter's "The Fog". But there's a light at the end of the tunnel ... Their now legendary slo motion version of the Springsteen classic, "I'm On Fire," is almost optimistic & naive. The cover drawing of Ruth's eyes gazing into the future with a single tear will haunt you. Rightfully standing out from the crowd... Chromatics imagine the soft rock focus of Hall & Oates stretched over a Fleetwood Mac beat. Trading the dancefloor for gorgeous chords & melancholic strings. The vinyl crackles like rain against a bass guitar. They live where it's always late & neon lights glimmer across the wet streets. This record has it all ... Despair...Romance ... Hope ... Beauty ... Pain. All in under 103 beats per melody.

2. Zombie Vocal (2.47)
3. In The Headlites (8.57)

METAL GODS

1. Metal Gods (3.57)
2. Hurt (3.57)

The "Metal Gods" record was recorded during Johnny & Ida's minimal wave period from 1999-2000. That's right...Ten years ago! Way ahead of the trend as usual, & the artwork still looks gorgeous. Lyrically, Ida explores themes inspired by "Erinnerungen an die Zukunft: Ungeloste Ratsel der Vergangenheit". Also known as..."Chariots Of The Gods", & the theory that the technologies & religions of ancient man were gifts from space travelers from other worlds. Coming to earth as metal gods from chariots in the sky. The B Side features their first take on L.A.'s legendary synth punk classic, "I Wanna Hurt". Originally performed by The Screamers. This was the first of five versions they recorded of this song. On the Cover the band is naked covered in glammy make-up inspired by Peggy Moffit.

EXCITE BIKE

1. Excite Bike (5.03)
2. Remake/ Remodel (3.26)

This is the domestic pressing of their 4th single, which was also released in Spain with a different cover. The original take of the song was scrapped after Ida heard it. She told Johnny, "I need the music to sound more like a motorcycle". Back to the drawing board, he came up with pitched down glam rex guitar, a torch song parlor piano, & electronic rhythm pads switching gears as Ida cruises her motorcycle full speed through five linear tunnels. Broken drum machines, weezing synthesizers, blown out guitars, & walls of noise, make this record so strange. & with a proper bludgeoning of Roxy Music's "Remake / Remodel" on the B Side, they keep it violent. Imagine an even sloppier Johnny Thunders colliding with a lopsided ESG drum loop. Recorded the week before they played an entire set of Roxy Music songs in Portland.
